Reading in a Foreign Language

Even for the best language students, reading in your target language can be difficult. Finding reading material that is at your level is half the battle.

There's a few ideas I have for TraveLingo/Teach Yourself a Language in the future; books and articles that contain both the target language and native language that you can read side by side, letting your brain to do the work, but I haven't been able to dedicate myself to them yet.

But, it turns out I wasn't the only one brainstorming alternative ways to approach foreign language reading! I recently found this amazing company that sells books along this premise, and I couldn't wait to share it with you guys here on the blog.

So without further ado... Introducing...

DiGlot's collection of books designed for reading in a foreign language. 


They have a few different bilingual versions of classic books. They all start out in English and slowly gain more foreign language words until at the end, it's no longer in English at all.

They have French and Spanish versions of Pride and Prejudice, Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes and Frankenstein, and they're always adding new titles and languages.

    Hi Alison, Your blog is very interesting. You are right that learning a new language is something one cannot fast track but if the right environment and resources are there then it becomes easier to learn at a fast pace. Learning a new language is a ton of work. The process can be so overwhelming that you may not even know where to begin. But mastering another language can open up a lot of opportunities. I strongly believe that parents must start teaching kids at an early age for better and quick learning. The attitude of the learner, the time the learner spends with the language, and the learner’s attentiveness to the language are very important factors in learning a new language. Thanks for sharing a nice post.

Expats: Getting Locals to Speak to You in Your Target Language

A year or more ago, I was at a Christmas fair in the Netherlands and I passed a booth ran by a Language School. They were giving away buttons that said "Speak Dutch to Me" (in Dutch of course). I thought this was just brilliant!  One of the most aggravating things about learning a language in a foreign country where everyone speaks English is that when you are trying to order your food or perform another transaction in your target language, many of them hear your accent and ask if it's easier to switch to English. I found that at least half the time during my first 6 months in the Netherlands, that was the case.  Most natives switch to English because they want to practice their  foreign language, too. Either that or they just want to help. But what if switching to English doesn't help? TYAL Gets a Makeover

 You guys might have noticed I have changed the look of the blog a little bit. I feel like it needed a refresh! There aren't a lot of things I can do through Blogger.com, which is the host I use to manage this website at the moment. In the future, I want to give it a complete makeover and make it easy to find information, find products, subscribe by email, access free downloads, and contact me. One thing I have learned both with language acquisition and business is that small steps forward are key. As long as you are making progress, it doesn't matter how slow you are moving. In fact, slow, steady progress can be more impactful than big leaps in the direction of your goals.
